How to Grow It - Herbs

Here are a few tips for successful herb gardening.

Basil

For Direct Sow. Plant seeds 1/4" deep, 2-3 seeds per inch, in rows 12" apart. Thin if needed, a final spacing of 4-8" apart produces the best results. 

For Transplant: Sow indoors 6 weeks prior to setting out. Plant 1/4" deep and keep at 70°F for best germination. Transplant outside when seedlings have 3-4 sets of leaves. Space the same as direct sown.

Average 5-10 days to germination at 65-70°F.

Borage

For Direct Sow: Plant seeds as soon as the soil has warmed in the spring. Plant 1/4- 1/2" deep, 3 seeds per foot in rows that are 18" apart. Thin to 12" spacing for individual plants. 

Transplant: Transplanting borage is possible, but not recommended, It develops a taproot and can be difficult to transplant. If you chose to use this method, try and disturb the roots as little as possible when planting.

Average 7-14 days to germination at 65-70°F 

Cilantro

For Direct Sow. Plant seeds in both spring and fall outside, 1-2 seeds per inch, 1/4- 1/2" deep in rows 12" apart. Thinning is not needed. Cilantro grows fine even when a little crowded. For coriander, thin the plants 4" apart.

For Transplant: Not recommended.

Average 7-10 days to germination at 65-70°F 

Mint

For Transplant. Start seeds 6-8 weeks before spring. Sprinkle lightly on top of the growing medium. Do not cover over, mint needs light to germinate. Transplant into individual containers when first true leaves appear. Transplant outside when 3-4" tall.

Average 10-14 days to germination at 70-75°F 

Dill

Dill can be planted every 3 weeks in the spring and fall for continuous harvest.

For Direct Sow. As soon as the threat of freeze is gone, plant seeds 1/4" deep, 2-3 seeds per inch, in rows 12" apart. Thin if needed, a final spacing of 4" apart produces the best results. 

For Transplant: Sow in individual pots, or growing trays. Sow 3-5 seeds per cell and thin to 1-2 plants each. Transplant to garden using 4" spacing in rows at least 12" apart.

Average 7-21 days to germination at 65-70°F.

Parsley

For Direct Sow. Sow in spring after the danger of frost has passed, 1/4" deep, 3 seeds per inch in single rows or 2-3" wide bands 12" apart. Thin plants to 8" apart.

For Transplant: Sow in 1" cell containers. Seeds take at least 3 weeks to germinate.

Average 14-30 days to germination at 65-70°F
